Steven
R. Gilmore,
born in Canada, is a self-taught artist with no formal training. A background
in DJing at a Vancouver nightclub introduced him to the music industry
which led to his first record sleeve design. Since that time, he has created
over 200 record sleeves working for several record labels such as: American
Recordings, Atlantic Records, Capitol Records, City Of Angels, EMI, The
David Geffen Company, Dreamworks, Invisible Records, Mammoth Records,
Motown Records, Nettwerk Records, Outpost Recordings, PolyGram Records,
Profile Records, Roadrunner Records, Sony Music, SPV (Germany), Universal
Records, Virgin Records, Warner Bros. Records, Wax Trax Records, World
Domination Music Group, Zoo Entertainment. Of note, SRG designed the packaging
and related promotional materials for the "300" movie soundtrack,
as well as for "The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers" and the
Academy Award-winning soundtrack for "The Lord Of The Rings: The
Return Of The King".
SRG's work has appeared in design publications such as: IdN Magazine (Hong
Kong), ID Magazine (International Design), Emigre Magazine, Insite (Architecture
and Design), Pantone's 'Color Wise' Magazine, Design Journal (Korea),
best of and honorable mention in Aldus Magazine's annual design contests,
best of in Publish Magazine's annual design contest, honorable mentions
in two of HOW Magazine's 'Self Promotion' issues and honorable mention
in HOW Magazine's International Design Annual, Award Of Excellence in
Print Magazine's Computer Annual, The Hollywood Reporter's Key Art
Awards. His work has been published in several books, The Art Directors
Club Of Los Angeles Annual (where he received recognition for 'outstanding
design'), Roger Dean's 'Album Cover Album', International Self Promotion
(Nippan), Computer Generation (Nippan), Graphis Typography 2 (Graphis
Books), Electronic Workshop "Illustration" (RotoVision), Fresh
Ideas in Letterhead And Business Card Design 4 (North Light Books), Creative
Edge: Type (North Light Books), Cool Type II (North Light Books), 30 Essential
Typefaces For A Lifetime (Rockport Publishers) and most recently Ars Erotica
- The Best Modern Erotic Art (Carlton Books). SRG
also authored and designed a book on graphic design entitled Photo-Graphics
published by RotoVision which is part of their ongoing Electronic
Workshop series.
SRG has created several corporate identities and promotional items for
such companies as Dita Eyewear, Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Industrial
Light and Magic, Miramax Films, 20th Century Fox, New Line Cinema, Xerox
and Coca-Cola as well as promotional material for fashion retail outlets
and dance companies. SRG currently resides in Los Angeles where he continues
his endeavors in the design and fine arts fields.
